Day to day activities
Now that I’ve settled into my Airstream and gotten organized, “normal” daily activities are being established. Just like at home the morning web work goes on. Backups, stats checks, e-mail, and reading the latest news.
In addition to the standard stuff some new items have dropped into the routine. Cleaning the trailer seems to be one new activity. I’ve noticed some mildew on the curtains, so I’ve been trying to figure out how to get them down and clean them. Not as easy as you’d think though.
Other activities have cropped up too. Back on the Appalachian Trail I noticed something that all hikers did when they hit town. After filling their stomachs, getting showers, and town chores, all hikers would invariably go to the local “outfitter” shop to look at hiking gear. Almost like moths to a flame. Well, now I pop into local RV shops to see what they’ve got.
Each shop carries the exact same stuff. Just like each hiking outfitter had the same goods too. But for some reason, folks with a hobby just can’t help but check out new stores where they’re at to see if there’s something different.
I haven’t just been going to poke around. New batteries are in order (since I bought the wrong sized batteries recently
). So, looking around RV stores right now has some purpose.
And finally, getting some purpose has also been a task each day. I’m still in a holding pattern waiting on medical tests, paperwork, and decisions about my former home (can’t mention the town now). But eventually all these things will reach some kind of resolution for good or bad. And once they do, what next? I’m sure it will be a trip somewhere. Maybe a favorite spot in the south (Damascus, VA), and maybe to meet up with friends (and make new ones too). But thinking about “what’s next” has occupied a good deal of time.
Dear Rich,
I guess that I have a lot to say about this post, “Day to day activities”.
Much of what you are feeling, I may have felt myself in times gone by. I too have been divorced, began fulltiming, had medical problems. Not so quickly as you however! A lot of stuff has been thrown at you in very quick order.
And so, as the wise old father figure, I have an iddy-biddy bit of a suggestion in order to keep all of this “stuff” from overwhelming.
Stay in the Now of Time. That is where your reality is, the only place where you exist. When you find yourself regretting about the past or worrying about the future; shake those thoughts right out of your mind. Outside of the Now of Time is where fear, panic, worry; stuff like that live. Don’t go there. Not if you want to have the best “today” that you may have.
I’ve messed around with how to stay in the Now of Time. Would you like to know how to do it? Hmmmmm? You would? OK, then!
Just be completely aware of your five senses. Hearing, seeing, touching, smelling and tasting. It is impossible to worry about something and also be listening intently to the sounds around you. Listening and tasting something at the same time is possible. Add touching to that list, and suddenly the task is overwhelming.
Be content about where you are right now. Searching for the perfect Camp will at some point be unhappy. If it is too noisy, move a few blocks. I have found a world of wonder making Camp next to a vacant lot. There may be flowers growing in that lot. Can you imagine the magic of a tiny flower?
Puppys and small children live in the Now of Time. These little guys just go around enjoying themselves. Never worrying about stuff like $money$ or what’s happening tomorrow. Just loving life. One day I decided that I wanted to live like these little guys, think like them too. Tough to do, but I believe that I now do it.
Bye for now,
George
